Cornsnakes (Pantherophis guttatus) are popular pet snakes known for their docile nature and vibrant patterns. This care sheet provides detailed information on how to properly care for cornsnakes in South Africa, including habitat setup, feeding, and health tips.

Enclosure

Size: For a single adult cornsnake, a minimum enclosure size of 90 cm x 45 cm x 45 cm (L x W x H) is recommended. Hatchlings can start in a 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm enclosure.

Material: Wooden cages or plastic terrariums are ideal as they retain heat and humidity well.

Substrate
Recommended Substrates: Aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or paper towels.

Avoid: Pine or cedar shavings, as these can be toxic to snakes.

Heating and Lighting

Temperature Gradient: Maintain a temperature gradient with a warm side and a cool side.

Warm Side: 28-30°C during the day.

Cool Side: 22-24°C.

Night Temperature: Should not drop below 18°C

Heat Source: Use an under-tank heating pad or a ceramic heat emitter. Avoid heat rocks.

Thermometer: Place one thermometer on each side of the enclosure to monitor temperatures.
Please also note that you should use a thermostat to regulate heat, these can be bought online for a couple of hundred bucks.

Humidity Level: Maintain humidity levels between 40-60%.

Humidity Control: Provide a water dish large enough for the snake to soak in, and mist the enclosure lightly if needed.

Day/Night Cycle: Provide a 12-hour light cycle using a UVB light or natural daylight.

Lighting Position: Ensure the light is positioned outside the enclosure to prevent burns.

Hides: Provide at least two hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool side.

Climbing and Enrichment: Include branches, rocks, and other items for the snake to climb and explore.

Feeding

  • Diet: Feed appropriately sized rodents (mice or rats). The prey item should be no larger than the widest part of the snake’s body.
  • Frequency:
  • Hatchlings: Every 5-7 days.
  • Juveniles: Every 7-10 days.
  • Adults: Every 10-14 days.

Feeding Method: Use tongs to offer pre-killed or thawed frozen prey.

Water Dish: Provide a clean water dish at all times, and change the water daily.

Position: Place the water dish on the cool side of the enclosure.

Handling Frequency: Handle your cornsnake 1-2 times per week to maintain tameness.

Handling Technique: Support the snake’s body and avoid sudden movements. Wash hands before and after handling to prevent the spread of germs.

Shedding Frequency: Cornsnakes shed their skin every 4-6 weeks.

Signs of Shedding: Dull skin color and blue, cloudy eyes.

Shedding Assistance: Provide a moist hide or increase humidity slightly to help with shedding.
